Viaggio sonoro tra libertà, groove e improvvisazione collettiva senza confini
Sempre belle sorprese dalla A.MA Records di Antonio Martino. Out Of Gravity è un titolo che non funziona solo come immagine poetica, ma come vero manifesto estetico e concettuale. Michele Papadia costruisce un disco che riflette sull’idea di “uscire dalla gravità” non come fuga, ma come sospensione delle regole che normalmente definiscono generi, ruoli e gerarchie musicali.
Il tema della libertà attraversa tutto il lavoro: libertà espressiva, ma anche libertà come responsabilità collettiva, condivisione di spazio sonoro, apertura all’imprevisto. In questo senso il disco si muove in una zona ibrida tra jazz contemporaneo, black music, groove funk, afrobeat ed elettronica, dove ogni elemento non si sovrappone all’altro ma si contamina in modo organico.
La scrittura di Papadia nasce dal pianoforte, ma si espande attraverso Hammond, Rhodes, Wurlitzer e sintetizzatori analogici, costruendo una tavolozza timbrica che vive di stratificazioni e mutazioni continue.
Uno degli aspetti centrali del disco è la sua dimensione corale. Il nucleo italiano del progetto è formato da musicisti che conoscono profondamente il linguaggio jazzistico contemporaneo e lo piegano a una dimensione più aperta e fisica.
Fabrizio Bosso alla tromba introduce una voce lirica ma spesso filtrata da effetti che la portano in territori meno canonici. Francesco Bearzatti al sax tenore lavora su un suono ruvido e narrativo, mentre Francesco Ponticelli al basso elettrico e Stefano Tamborrino alla batteria costruiscono una base ritmica elastica, più vicina a un flusso che a una griglia rigida.
Attorno a questo nucleo si sviluppa una rete internazionale che amplifica il senso del progetto: Kokayi porta una vocalità che si muove tra spoken word e improvvisazione pura, trasformando la voce in strumento ritmico e narrativo; Deshawn “D’Vibes” Alexander inserisce un’impronta funk e urbana; Angela Esmeralda e Mia Cooper aggiungono dimensioni vocali diverse, tra intensità lirica e astrazione; Kalifa Kone con ngoni (strumento tradizionale maliano) e congas apre invece una connessione diretta con matrici africane, dando al ritmo una dimensione quasi rituale. Il risultato è una formazione che non funziona come somma di individualità, ma come organismo in continua trasformazione.
Out Of Gravity si muove come un unico percorso, dove le dieci tracce non sono episodi separati ma parti di uno stesso discorso. Ogni brano aggiunge una sfumatura diversa all’idea di libertà che attraversa tutto il disco.
La title track Out Of Gravity entra subito nel vivo: un tempo irregolare crea un andamento instabile ma naturale, su cui la voce di Kokayi si muove con grande libertà, tra improvvisazione e parola. Non è un semplice ospite, ma una presenza che diventa parte del suono.
Afrolution porta il disco su un terreno più ritmico: tutto nasce da un riff di basso costruito su una pentatonica minore, da cui si sviluppa un groove circolare tra funk e afrobeat, diretto e fisico.
Questa energia ritorna in A New Beginning, ma con un’atmosfera più aperta: il brano suggerisce un’idea di cambiamento e ripartenza, e il suono del ngoni di Kalifa Kone aggiunge una dimensione più profonda e naturale.
Con Mass Arrow il clima cambia: un jazz waltz dalla melodia cantabile, dedicato alla moglie Letizia, con una scrittura più europea e delicata, pur restando in movimento dal punto di vista armonico.
Freedom To Live è uno dei momenti più immediati: un beat lineare, una struttura semplice e un messaggio diretto, rafforzato dal testo di Mia Cooper, che parla di libertà personale senza filtri.
Balanced Entropy è uno dei brani più rappresentativi: mette insieme ordine e libertà, alternando parti più strutturate ad altre più aperte, fino a una sezione finale più psichedelica, con lo spoken word di Angela Esmeralda.
Flowing Soul mostra invece il lato più vicino alla nu soul e all’hip hop: nato strumentale, prende forma definitiva con la voce di D’Vibes, che aggiunge un tocco caldo e fluido.
Freedom To Pray rallenta il passo: pianoforte e tromba dialogano in modo essenziale e intimo, prima che il brano si apra gradualmente al resto del gruppo.
In My Soul unisce una melodia semplice a una struttura armonica più articolata: è un brano diretto ma allo stesso tempo profondo, tra soul, gospel e introspezione.
Chiude Peace Of Mind, una ballad in duo tra piano Rhodes e sax: un momento raccolto ed essenziale, che mantiene una forte spontaneità anche quando il suono si apre, lasciando entrare gradualmente il resto dell’ensemble.

Out Of Gravity lascia la sensazione di un percorso aperto, più che di un punto d’arrivo. Michele Papadia costruisce un lavoro in cui tutto ruota attorno al dialogo: tra musicisti, tra linguaggi, tra radici diverse che qui trovano uno spazio comune senza perdere identità.
È un disco che scorre, che respira, che alterna energia e sospensione senza mai forzare le transizioni. Il groove resta sempre presente, ma non è mai fine a sé stesso: è il terreno su cui si muovono idee, relazioni, possibilità.
Alla fine resta soprattutto questo: un senso di libertà reale, non dichiarata, che si percepisce nel modo in cui la musica si apre, si lascia attraversare e cambia forma. Un invito all’ascolto che non chiede di essere definito, ma semplicemente vissuto.

Always a source of welcome surprises, A.MA Records, led by Antonio Martino, once again delivers. Out Of Gravity is not just a poetic title, but a true aesthetic and conceptual statement. Michele Papadia shapes an album that reflects on the idea of “breaking free from gravity” not as an escape, but as a suspension of the rules that usually define genres, roles, and musical hierarchies.
The theme of freedom runs throughout the entire work: freedom of expression, but also freedom as a shared responsibility, as the act of creating and inhabiting a common sonic space, open to the unexpected. In this sense, the album moves within a hybrid territory between contemporary jazz, black music, funk-driven grooves, afrobeat, and electronics, where each element blends organically rather than overlapping.
Papadia’s writing originates at the piano, yet expands through Hammond organ, Rhodes, Wurlitzer, and analog synthesizers, building a constantly shifting palette of layered and evolving textures.
One of the defining aspects of the album is its collective dimension. The Italian core of the project brings together musicians deeply rooted in the language of contemporary jazz, here shaped into something more open and physical.
Fabrizio Bosso’s trumpet introduces a lyrical voice, often processed with effects that push it beyond conventional boundaries. Francesco Bearzatti’s tenor sax carries a raw, narrative tone, while Francesco Ponticelli on electric bass and Stefano Tamborrino on drums create a flexible rhythmic foundation, more fluid than strictly structured.
Around this core, an international network expands the scope of the project: Kokayi brings a vocal approach that moves between spoken word and pure improvisation, turning the voice into a rhythmic and narrative instrument; Deshawn “D’Vibes” Alexander adds a funk-oriented, urban touch; Angela Esmeralda and Mia Cooper contribute distinct vocal colors, ranging from lyrical intensity to abstraction; Kalifa Kone, with ngoni (a traditional Malian string instrument) and congas, introduces a direct link to African roots, giving the rhythm an almost ritual quality. The result is not a sum of individuals, but a constantly evolving collective organism.
Out Of Gravity unfolds as a continuous journey, where the ten tracks are not isolated episodes but interconnected parts of a broader narrative. Each piece adds a different shade to the album’s central idea of freedom.
The title track Out Of Gravity immediately sets the tone: an irregular pulse creates a shifting yet natural flow, over which Kokayi’s voice moves freely between improvisation and spoken expression, becoming an integral part of the sonic structure.
Afrolution brings the focus to rhythm: built around a bass riff rooted in the minor pentatonic scale, it develops into a circular groove blending funk and afrobeat with a direct, physical energy.
This same energy returns in A New Beginning, but with a more open and luminous atmosphere. The piece suggests renewal and transformation, while Kalifa Kone’s ngoni adds depth and an organic, almost ancestral quality.
With Mass Arrow, the mood shifts: a jazz waltz with a singable melody, dedicated to Papadia’s wife Letizia, revealing a more European sensitivity, with subtle echoes of impressionism within a harmonically rich framework.
Freedom To Live stands out for its immediacy: a straight beat, a simple structure, and a clear message, reinforced by Mia Cooper’s lyrics about personal freedom without filters.
Balanced Entropy represents one of the album’s key moments, bringing together structure and openness. It moves across different sections, from more tradition-rooted passages to freer, evolving ones, leading into a more psychedelic final part featuring Angela Esmeralda’s spoken word.
Flowing Soul highlights the influence of neo soul and hip hop: originally conceived as an instrumental track, it finds its final shape through D’Vibes’ vocal contribution, adding warmth and fluidity.
Freedom To Pray slows the pace, offering an intimate dialogue between piano and trumpet before gradually opening up to the full ensemble.
In My Soul balances a simple, direct melody with a more complex harmonic structure, resulting in a piece that feels both introspective and open, rooted in soul and gospel traditions.
The album closes with Peace Of Mind, a ballad in duo between Rhodes piano and saxophone: a restrained and intimate moment that retains its spontaneity even as the sound gently expands to include the full ensemble.
Out Of Gravity ultimately feels like an open-ended journey rather than a fixed destination. Michele Papadia creates a work centered on dialogue—between musicians, between languages, between different musical roots that find a shared space without losing their identity.
It is an album that flows and breathes, moving naturally between energy and suspension. The groove is always present, yet never an end in itself: it becomes the ground on which ideas, relationships, and possibilities take shape.
What remains is a genuine sense of freedom—never declared, but deeply felt in the way the music unfolds, evolves, and transforms. An invitation to listen, not to define, but simply to experience.
