C’è chi fa musica per intrattenere. Chi per stupire. E poi ci sono i Klang!, che fanno musica per disarticolare. Per smontare certezze, per accendere crepe nel muro del già noto, per infilarsi proprio lì dove la comunicazione rassicurante si sgretola e l’abitudine sonora si fa silenzio, pausa, scarto.

Registrato dal vivo nella cornice sospesa e affascinante dei giardini del Museo Sartorio di Trieste, durante il Space Music – Musica Concreta Festival del luglio 2024, Scarto è un atto radicale. Un’unica lunga traccia di 45 minuti che scorre come un organismo imprevedibile, sempre in mutazione, tra impulsi elettrici e materici, tra fantasie rumoristiche e fendenti ritmici, tra cortocircuiti improvvisi e lampi di bellezza inattesa.

Il progetto Klang! nasce con il disco Catastrofe Del Vuoto Elettrodebole, frutto del sodalizio tra Andrea Massaria (chitarre) e Alessandro Seravalle (elettronica, composizione), alias Anton Klang e Karlheinz Lärm – due pseudonimi che sono dichiarazioni poetiche, omaggi alla musica colta e all’avanguardia. Con l’ingresso del batterista Stefano Edgard Schüsse Giust, Klang! diventa un trio stabile e sempre più imprevedibile, come dimostra questa prova live, cruda e coraggiosa, perfettamente modellata nel mix e mastering da Gian Pietro Seravalle al GPS studio.

Ascoltando Scarto, il brano che intitola il disco e che occupa tutto il lavoro (45,09 min.), ci si accorge presto che non si tratta solo di musica. O meglio, non di quella musica che ci è familiare. Qui il suono è linguaggio di resistenza. È arte che si sottrae, che devia, che – come scrive Seravalle nelle note – “rifiuta il compromesso con la deriva lobotomizzante della musica di consumo”. Il rifiuto diventa creazione. Il residuo si trasforma in verità. Lo scarto, come nei tarocchi, è la carta che cambia il gioco.

I tre strumenti si incrociano e si alternano, come se si rispondessero a vicenda, creando un dialogo teso e dinamico., dove ogni colpo è anche una carezza e ogni silenzio è pieno di significato. La batteria è il cuore irregolare, imprevedibile, pulsante. La chitarra, ora affilata come un bisturi, ora soffusa come un ricordo sbiadito. L’elettronica, vera anima cangiante, si fa tessuto connettivo ma anche detonatore di caos.

Il risultato è una musica che non cerca facili melodie, ma va dritta alla verità. Rifiuta l’armonia per abbracciare la tensione, destabilizzando l’ascolto e spingendolo a cercare qualcosa di nuovo. A tratti sembra di perdersi in una giungla sonora dove il tempo è fluido, in altri di trovarsi in una cattedrale dissonante, dove il vuoto è colmo di possibilità. C'è l’influenza del free jazz, della psichedelia, della musica concreta, ma anche un respiro futurista. E al centro di tutto, la volontà di comunicare senza bisogno di parole.

Un suggerimento spassionato: non approcciate Scarto con l’idea di “capirlo”. Non è un enigma da risolvere, ma un varco da attraversare.

Meglio lasciarsi prendere così com'è, senza troppe aspettative, con il volume alto per sentire ogni sfumatura. Non serve capire tutto, né cercare un senso preciso. A volte è proprio quando qualcosa sembra fuori posto che arriva un messaggio più profondo. Uno di quelli che ti restano dentro.

I Klang! non fanno musica da sottofondo. Fanno musica che ti chiede attenzione, che ti coinvolge. Scarto non è un disco facile, ma è proprio questo il bello: ti mette davanti a qualcosa di diverso, fuori dagli schemi. È un gesto di libertà, un modo per ricordarci che si può ancora fare arte senza seguire le mode. Una musica che ti scuote, ti confonde e, proprio per questo, ti fa pensare.

Some make music to entertain. Others to amaze. And then there are Klang!, who make music to disarticulate. To dismantle certainties, to spark cracks in the wall of the already known, to slip right into the place where reassuring communication crumbles and sonic habit turns into silence, pause, deviation.

Recorded live in the suspended and captivating setting of the gardens of the Sartorio Museum in Trieste, during the Space Music – Musica Concreta Festival in July 2024, Scarto is a radical act. A single 45-minute track that flows like an unpredictable, ever-evolving organism—between electric and material impulses, noise-driven fantasies and rhythmic slashes, sudden short circuits and flashes of unexpected beauty.

The Klang! project was born with the album Catastrofe Del Vuoto Elettrodebole, the result of the creative partnership between Andrea Massaria (guitars) and Alessandro Seravalle (electronics, composition), aka Anton Klang and Karlheinz Lärm—two pseudonyms that are poetic statements, tributes to highbrow and avant-garde music. With the addition of drummer Stefano Edgard Schüsse Giust, Klang! became a stable and increasingly unpredictable trio, as this raw and courageous live performance shows—flawlessly shaped in the mix and mastering by Gian Pietro Seravalle at GPS Studio.

Listening to Scarto, it soon becomes clear that this is not just music. Or rather, not the kind of music we’re used to. Here, sound becomes a language of resistance. It is art that eludes, that deviates, that—as Seravalle writes in the liner notes—“refuses to compromise with the lobotomizing drift of consumer music.” Refusal becomes creation. Residue turns into truth. Scarto, like in tarot, is the card that changes the game.

The three instruments intertwine and alternate, as if answering each other, creating a tense and dynamic dialogue, where every hit is also a caress, and every silence is loaded with meaning. The drums are the irregular, unpredictable, pulsating heart. The guitar—at times sharp as a scalpel, at others soft as a faded memory. The electronics, the true chameleonic soul, become connective tissue but also a detonator of chaos.

The result is music that doesn't seek easy melodies, but cuts straight to the truth. It rejects harmony in favor of tension, destabilizing the listening experience and pushing it toward something new. At times, it feels like getting lost in a sonic jungle where time is fluid; at others, like standing in a dissonant cathedral where emptiness is filled with possibilities. There are echoes of free jazz, psychedelia, musique concrète, but also a futurist breath. And at the core of it all, the will to communicate without needing words.

A heartfelt suggestion: don’t approach Scarto with the idea of “understanding it.” It’s not a riddle to be solved, but a threshold to be crossed.
Better to let yourself be taken in as it is, without too many expectations, with the volume turned up to catch every nuance. You don’t need to grasp everything or seek a precise meaning. Sometimes, it’s exactly when something feels out of place that a deeper message comes through—one that stays with you.

Klang! don’t make background music. They make music that demands your attention, that draws you in. Scarto is not an easy album—but that’s the beauty of it: it confronts you with something different, off the grid. It’s a gesture of freedom, a reminder that art can still be made without following trends. Music that shakes you, confuses you, and precisely for that reason—makes you think.
