Black Pie – Angels (Black Widow Records, 2024)
Da appassionato di musica di qualità, non posso che ringraziare la Black Widow Records di Genova per l'eccellente lavoro che svolge sulle nuove produzioni, confermando ancora una volta che anche nel nostro Paese si produce musica di altissimo livello.
Rientra in questa categoria la band ligure dei Black Pie che con Angels pubblica un debutto davvero coi fiocchi, fresco e pieno di dinamismo.
Il trio possiamo sicuramente definirlo un supergruppo in quanto i componenti hanno esperienza in gruppi di spessore della scena italiana, ad iniziare da Elena “Hellen” Villa alla voce e al basso (già voce solista nella band pop rock dei Malcondita), Claudio “Clode” Cinquegrana alle chitarre (in una delle mille diramazioni dei New Trolls) e Silvano “Syl” Bottari, alla batteria (membro della storica band metal dei Vanexa … come special guest, in questo lavoro, troviamo Stefano Genti, un altro New Trolls alle tastiere e cori.
Angels, pubblicato a settembre 2024, è davvero un concentrato di dinamismo e grandi idee che spazia dall’hard rock al blues passando per il funk e il jazz.
Si legge nel comunicato stampa che Angels è un viaggio alchemico di un'anima che, in procinto di nascere, vola e planando sul nostro pianeta, sceglie il suo corpo e la sua avventura di vita.
Tra le fonti d’ispirazione musicale ci sono i Led Zeppelin, Rush, Kansas e Porcupine Tree, per un menù ricco che aiuta a tenere alta l’attenzione per tutte le 10 tracce che compongono la scaletta del lavoro.
Ad aprire le danze “Off the Radar”, brano introspettivo dove dove il folk e la splendida voce di Elena “Hellen” Villa si incontrano per creare magia musicale.
I giochi si fanno duri con il funk di “Kaos night”, primo singolo, con la sezione ritmica sugli scudi ed i riff di chitarra taglienti come una lama … grande brano dove anche il basso svolge un lavoro micidiale.
Si placano un pò' i toni con “Little lady bright” dove spicca la voce, buona per ogni stagione, della Villa e un gran lavoro nei suoni che, complici anche le tastiere, rasentano il prog.
Si vira decisamente verso l’hard rock con “Borderline”; voce sontuosa sostenuta da una chitarra incisiva, con basso e batteria a svolgere un lavoro egregio; un brano da far ascoltare ai giovani per spiegare come deve essere l’hard rock nel nuovo millennio.
Un basso grosso e grasso introduce “Your fault”, funk rock micidiale con ritornello killer ed un assolo di chitarra di Cinquegrana che vale da solo il prezzo del biglietto; energia e qualità dispensata senza come se non ci fosse un domani.
Un po’ di relax arriva con la ballad dai toni hard e psichedelici di “Welcome Toxic”, dove la band prova a spingersi oltre, sconfinando oltre la Terra, fino nello spazio.
Brano molto ricercato e raffinato è “People from the Sky”, che ribadisce la versatilità compositiva ed esecutiva della band … come sempre ottima la prova vocale della vocalist.
Si alza il battito cardiaco in “From the ashes”, dove il ritmo funk incrocia le linee strutturali del prog, creando una miscela esplosiva innescata da un altro ottimo assolo di chitarra.
Molto bella “Blanket tide”, secondo me tra le tracce più progressive del lotto per i suoi cambi di tempo ed umori … sicuramente per apprezzarlo al meglio richiede un ascolto attento magari con un bel paio di cuffie.
Questo ottimo album si chiude (nella versione digitale) con “Lift it”, che mostra tutto il talento del trio e le qualità balistiche di Cinquegrana alla chitarra.
A chiudere invece il supporto fisico, troviamo “Follow”, breve viaggio in compagnia della chitarra di Cinquegrana.
"Angels" si rivela un album di grande livello e spessore, capace di competere senza timore con le migliori produzioni internazionali. Con questo lavoro, i Black Pie si affermano come una delle realtà più promettenti e significative del panorama musicale italiano del 2024.

Black Pie – Angels (Black Widow Records)
As an enthusiast of quality music, I must undoubtedly thank Black Widow Records from Genoa for the excellent work they do on new productions, which once again demonstrate that great music is being made in our country.
Among these impressive productions is the Genoese band Black Pie, which with Angels delivers a debut that is truly remarkable, fresh, and full of dynamism.
The trio can certainly be considered a supergroup, as its members have experience in some of Italy’s most prominent musical acts. This includes Elena "Hellen" Villa on vocals and bass (formerly the lead singer of the pop rock band Malcondita), Claudio "Clode" Cinquegrana on guitar (having played in one of the many branches of New Trolls), and Silvano "Syl" Bottari on drums (a member of the historic metal band Vanexa). As a special guest on this album, Stefano Genti, another member of New Trolls, contributes with keyboards and backing vocals.
Angels, released in September 2024, is truly a concentrate of dynamism and great ideas, ranging from hard rock to blues, funk, and jazz.
The press release mentions that Angels is an alchemical journey of a soul that, about to be born, flies and, gliding over our planet, chooses its body and life adventure. Among the musical influences are Led Zeppelin, Rush, Kansas, and Porcupine Tree, offering a rich musical menu that maintains the listener's attention throughout the album’s ten tracks.
Opening the album is Off the Radar, an introspective track where folk and the stunning voice of Elena "Hellen" Villa come together to create musical magic.
Things get intense with the funky Kaos Night, the first single, featuring a punchy rhythm section and guitar riffs sharp as blades. A great track where the bass also plays a pivotal role.
The tone softens a bit with Little Lady Bright, showcasing Villa’s versatile voice and superb sound work, with keyboards adding a touch of prog elements.
Borderline takes a clear turn toward hard rock, with a majestic vocal performance supported by incisive guitar, and a solid bass and drum section. It’s a track that could be used to teach younger generations what hard rock should sound like in the new millennium.
A thick and heavy bass line introduces Your Fault, a lethal funk rock track with a killer chorus and a guitar solo by Cinquegrana that alone is worth the price of admission. Energy and quality flow freely throughout this track.
Welcome Toxic offers a bit of relaxation, a hard and psychedelic ballad where the band pushes its limits, venturing beyond Earth into space.
People from the Sky is an elegant and refined track that further highlights the band’s compositional and performing versatility. As always, Villa’s vocal performance is top-notch.
From the Ashes picks up the pace, where funk rhythms merge with prog’s structural lines, creating an explosive mixture fueled by another excellent guitar solo.
Blanket Tide is a beautiful track, possibly the most progressive of the bunch, with its tempo changes and shifting moods. To appreciate it fully, it calls for a careful listen, perhaps with a good pair of headphones.
The album ends (in the digital version) with Lift It, which showcases the trio’s talent and Cinquegrana’s fiery guitar skills.
The physical version of the album (currently the CD) concludes with Follow, a brief journey accompanied by Cinquegrana’s guitar.
Angels proves to be an album of great quality and depth, able to compete confidently with the best international productions. With this work, Black Pie establishes itself as one of the most promising and significant bands in the Italian music scene of 2024.
