Odessa – Stazione Getsemani XXV (Lizard Records, 2024)
Gli Odessa ritornano sul luogo del delitto e lo fanno registrando ex novo il loro disco d’esordio Stazione Getsemani, pubblicato dalla Mellow Records nel ormai lontano 1999.
Sono passati venticinque anni da quando cinque ragazzi (Valerio De Angelis al basso, Federico Filonzi alla batteria, Boris Bartoletti alle chitarre, Lorenzo Giovagnoli alla voce e tastiere e Gianluca Milanese al flauto) si ritrovano in sala di registrazione per dare corpo e note alla loro visione musicale fatta di un pregevole hard rock e prog e lo fanno sotto la direzione artistica di Loris Furlan.
Bene, oggi questo disco rivede la luce Stazione Getsemani XXV con una veste più attuale e con tutta l’esperienza che la band ha maturato in tutti questi anni e, non meno importante, con una qualità di registrazione decisamente superiore al disco del 1999.
A rimettere mano su quell’opera sono gli Odessa odierni che vedono, oltre i componenti storici Lorenzo Giovagnoli, Gianluca Milanese e Valerio De Angelis i nuovi (si fa per dire visto che suonano oramai da anni con questa formazione) Giulio Vampa alle chitarre e Marco Fabbri alla batteria.
A produrre il tutto la Prog Lady Marina Montobbio, lo stesso Lorenzo Giovagnoli e l’associazione Open Mind per l’etichetta Lizard Records di Loris Furlan.
Lo stupendo artwork riprende il tema del disco del 1999 infatti a realizzarlo è lo stesso Silvano Braido (mancato di recente) che aveva dato la sua opera nel disco di venticinque anni fa.
Il bel libretto contiene tutti i testi e i credits più due foto del gruppo mentre si esibisce al Trasimeno Prog Festival il 26 Agosto del 2022.
La qualità delle composizioni di Stazione Getsemani, nella versione XXV, risplendo di nuovi colori e sfumature e risultano assolutamente attuali questo grazie anche alla maturità raggiunta dai musicisti e dalla qualità dei suoni.
Ho avuto il piacere e la fortuna di assistere a due concerti della band, il primo al Trasimeno Prog Festival nell’Agosto de 2022 e il secondo pochi giorni fa al 2 Days Prog + 1 a Revislate e vi posso garantire che entrambi i concerti sono stati una bomba.
Ma veniamo al disco che presenta dieci tracce di cui due cover, “Alzo un muro elettrico”, brano di Luis Bacalov e il Rovescio della Medaglia dove spicca la splendida voce di Giovagnoli ed un sound pieno di cambi di umori e ritmo … la seconda cover è lo strumentale “Caronte” dei Trip in una versione potente dove svetta e si insinua un moog ma tutti i musicisti hanno modo di dare il meglio anche con assoli di flauto, chitarra senza dimenticare la poderosa sezione ritmica.
Un brano che fotografa al meglio cosa sono gli Odessa è l’opener “Esilio” un mix perfetto di hard rock, progressive e jazz con assoli stupendi di chitarra, organo e flauto.
La title track “Stazione Getsemani” presenta una notevole prestazione vocale, finalmente messa a fuoco, insieme a tutti gli strumenti, dalla nuova registrazione e che è il miglior biglietto da visita per scoprire la musica della band.
Un plauso a parte per Marco Fabbri, batterista poliedrico, capace di picchiare ma anche di accarezzare le pelli con disinvolta maestria e per Valerio De Angelis, bassista dalle doti non comuni che sa dare potenza ma anche colore ai brani così come Gianluca Milanese che col suo flauto marchia di note folk e classiche il sound della band.
Non posso non citare “L’Incontro”, il brano più lungo coi suoi dieci minuti abbondanti introdotti da un tappeto di tastiere e dai vocalizzi in odore di Demetrio Stratos di Lorenzo Giovagnoli … qui le culture si fondono magicamente per un viaggio tra oriente e occidente per poi dare il palcoscenico alla splendida chitarra di Giulio Vampa ben supportato da pianoforte, tastiere ed infine organo.
Cambi di ritmi, umori, liriche ben ancorate ai nostri tempi anche se scritte venticinque anni fa, arrangiamenti molto curati, questa è la ricetta per un ottimo album prog che si pone tra i miei preferiti non solo di questo 2024.
Vorrei chiudere queste righe segnalando anche “Orizzonte Anima”, brano anche questo, nella tradizione prog che vede uno sviluppo molto vario e che presenta una band molto coesa e piena d’inventiva così come l’avevamo lasciata due anni fa con lo stupendo L'Alba della Civiltà.
Se amate certe sonorità hard prog con i 70s nel DNA non potete farvi sfuggire questo Stazione Getsemani XXV … anche se avete la vecchia versione fatevi anche questa che mette finalmente ben in evidenza le composizioni e le doti strumentali del gruppo.

The Odessa return to the scene of the crime, re-recording from scratch their debut album *Stazione Getsemani*, which was originally released by Mellow Records back in 1999.
Twenty-five years have passed since five young men (Valerio De Angelis on bass, Federico Filonzi on drums, Boris Bartoletti on guitars, Lorenzo Giovagnoli on vocals and keyboards, and Gianluca Milanese on flute) gathered in the recording studio to bring their musical vision to life. A blend of fine hard rock and prog, it was created under the artistic direction of Loris Furlan.
Today, the album is reborn as *Stazione Getsemani XXV*, with a more contemporary touch and the benefit of all the experience the band has gained over the years. Not least, it boasts a far superior recording quality compared to the 1999 version.
The modern-day Odessa, which alongside original members Lorenzo Giovagnoli, Gianluca Milanese, and Valerio De Angelis, now includes "newcomers" Giulio Vampa on guitar and Marco Fabbri on drums (who have actually been playing with this lineup for years), revisited the work. The album is produced by Prog Lady Marina Montobbio, Lorenzo Giovagnoli himself, and the Open Mind association, for Loris Furlan’s Lizard Records label.
The stunning artwork reprises the theme of the 1999 album, created once again by Silvano Braido (who recently passed away), the same artist responsible for the original artwork 25 years ago.
The beautiful booklet includes all the lyrics, credits, and two photos of the band performing at the Trasimeno Prog Festival on August 26, 2022.
The compositions of *Stazione Getsemani XXV* shine with new colors and nuances, feeling absolutely current thanks to the maturity of the musicians and the enhanced sound quality.
I had the pleasure and luck of attending two of the band's concerts: the first at the Trasimeno Prog Festival in August 2022 and the second just a few days ago at the 2 Days Prog + 1 in Revislate. I can assure you, both performances were explosive.
Now, let’s get to the album, which features ten tracks, including two covers. The first is "Alzo un muro elettrico," a track by Luis Bacalov and Il Rovescio della Medaglia, highlighted by Giovagnoli's splendid vocals and a sound filled with mood and rhythm changes. The second cover is the instrumental “Caronte” by Trip, in a powerful version featuring a prominent Moog, while all the musicians have their moments to shine with solos on flute and guitar, backed by a strong rhythm section.
A track that best captures what Odessa is all about is the opener "Esilio," a perfect blend of hard rock, progressive, and jazz, with stunning solos on guitar, organ, and flute.
The title track, "Stazione Getsemani," offers an outstanding vocal performance, finally brought into focus along with all the instruments thanks to the new recording. It's the best introduction to discovering the band's music.
A special mention goes to Marco Fabbri, a versatile drummer capable of both hitting hard and delicately caressing the drums with effortless skill, and to Valerio De Angelis, an extraordinary bassist who brings both power and nuance to the songs. Gianluca Milanese, with his flute, adds folk and classical touches to the band’s sound.
I must also mention "L'Incontro," the longest track at over ten minutes, starting with a lush keyboard backdrop and Lorenzo Giovagnoli's vocalizations, reminiscent of Demetrio Stratos. Here, cultures magically merge, taking the listener on a journey between East and West, before the spotlight shines on Giulio Vampa's magnificent guitar, beautifully supported by piano, keyboards, and, finally, organ.
Rhythm changes, shifting moods, lyrics that remain relevant despite being written 25 years ago, and meticulously crafted arrangements—this is the recipe for an excellent prog album that stands among my favorites not just of 2024.
To conclude, I’d also like to highlight “Orizzonte Anima,” another track steeped in the prog tradition, featuring a highly varied development and showcasing a cohesive, inventive band, just as we had left them two years ago with the stunning *L'Alba della Civiltà*.
If you love certain hard prog sounds with a 70s DNA, you cannot miss *Stazione Getsemani XXV*. Even if you have the old version, get this one too, as it finally brings out the compositions and instrumental prowess of the group.
