Egidio Rondinone – OOPARTS Out Of Place Artists (A.MA Records, 2024)
Il 20 Settembre è uscito, per l’etichetta A.MA Records di Antonio Martino, “OOPARTS” (acronimo di OUT Of Place Artifacts che qui è stato modificato in Out Of Place Artists) del batterista e beat maker Egidio Rondinone.
L’album segue di undici anni l’ottimo “Lookin' Glass” e si posiziona tra le novità più interessanti che ho potuto ascoltare in questo 2024.
Il jazz sposa l’elettronica, l’hip-hop, la house music creando un sound affascinante che incorpora hip hop, house music, ritmi afro e funk.
Rondinone si distingue per un percorso musicale di alto livello come batterista e beatmaker, collaborando con artisti di rilievo come il Paolo Achenza Trio, Zona45, Pooglia Tribe e la leggenda jazz americana Greg Osby. Ha anche lasciato il segno nel mondo del cinema, producendo la colonna sonora di Senza Problemi degli Articolo 31 per il film Senza Filtro. Tra i suoi progetti futuri, spiccano collaborazioni con Matt Demerritt, membro dei De La Soul e musicista del tour di Macy Gray. Un artista dal background solido ed in continua evoluzione.
Per questo lavoro si è avvalso di una line-up che include artisti di spicco come lo statunitense Fontaine Burnett, il rinomato trombonista Gianluca Petrella, Valentina Magaletti, Sanja Markovic e Milena Jancuric, solo per citarne alcuni.
Ciò che colpisce di più è la sua abilità di saper gestire e di mantenere l’equilibrio tra tutti gli elementi sopra descritti.
Non è un disco per ballarci sopra (anche se non è vietato); i ritmi sono ben presenti ma si tratta di un lavoro dove la sperimentazione è evidente così come gli arrangiamenti tutt’altro che banali, anzi la produzione, di gran livello, mette in risalto tutto il bagaglio artistico e strumentale compreso il gran lavoro fatto con dei campioni presi del catalogo dell’A.MA Records.
Le otto tracce che compongono la scaletta del disco sono tutte composte dallo stesso Rondinone e tutte di elevata qualità ed è difficile trovare differenze qualitative tra di esse ma se devo proprio scegliere inizierei col segnalare la traccia che apre l’album “Journey”, un viaggio tra suggestioni e groove elettronici che si intrecciano perfettamente a inserti di jazz molto raffinato e dove spicca, oltre alla ritmica, l’ottima tromba di Dereck Banach.
Così come non posso non citare “The Beginning” dal battito ipnotizzante, che vede, oltre ai campionamenti elettronici, la presenza del flauto di Milena Jancuric, la bella voce di Sanja Marcovi e il drum pad di Fontaine Burnett a dare manforte alla batteria di Valentina Magaletti.
Il consiglio, comunque, è di ascoltare il lavoro nella sua completezza per dare un senso al viaggio emotivo che lo scorrere dei vari brani provoca creando un’esperienza davvero unica.
Vi vorrei segnalare, in conclusione, “Children Of Lyons”, che chiude il lavoro portandoci in un viaggio verso l’Africa tra mille suggestioni date oltre che dal costrutto ritmico anche dalla voce di Emma D’Erasmo.
Un disco che più ascolto e più mi intriga, perché scopro ogni volta, nuove ed affascinanti sfumature.

On September 20th, "OOPARTS" (an acronym for OUT Of Place Artifacts, here modified to Out Of Place Artists) by drummer and beatmaker Egidio Rondinone was released under Antonio Martino’s label A.MA Records.
The album comes eleven years after the excellent "Lookin' Glass" and stands out as one of the most interesting releases I've had the chance to listen to in 2024.
Jazz meets electronic music, hip-hop, and house music, creating a captivating sound that incorporates hip-hop, house music, Afro, and funk rhythms.
Rondinone stands out for his high-level musical career as a drummer and beatmaker, collaborating with prominent artists such as the Paolo Achenza Trio, Zona45, Pooglia Tribe, and American jazz legend Greg Osby. He has also left his mark in the world of cinema by producing the soundtrack for Articolo 31's *Senza Problemi* for the film *Senza Filtro*. Among his future projects are collaborations with Matt Demerritt, a member of De La Soul and musician from Macy Gray’s tour. An artist with a solid and constantly evolving background.
For this work, he relied on a line-up featuring standout artists such as American Fontaine Burnett, renowned trombonist Gianluca Petrella, Valentina Magaletti, Sanja Markovic, and Milena Jancuric, to name just a few.
What is most striking is his ability to manage and maintain balance among all the elements described above.
This isn’t an album made for dancing (although it’s not forbidden); the rhythms are very present, but this is a work where experimentation is evident, as are the arrangements that are anything but trivial. The production, at a very high level, highlights all the artistic and instrumental richness, including the excellent work done with samples taken from the A.MA Records catalog.
The eight tracks that make up the album are all composed by Rondinone himself and are all of high quality, making it difficult to find significant qualitative differences between them. If I had to choose, I would start by pointing out the opening track, "Journey," a trip through electronic grooves and refined jazz elements, where, in addition to the rhythm section, Dereck Banach's excellent trumpet stands out.
I also have to mention "The Beginning," with its hypnotic beat, featuring electronic samples, Milena Jancuric’s flute, Sanja Marcovi’s beautiful voice, and Fontaine Burnett's drum pad complementing Valentina Magaletti's drums.
However, I recommend listening to the album in its entirety to fully appreciate the emotional journey that the flow of the tracks creates, resulting in a truly unique experience.
In conclusion, I’d like to highlight "Children Of Lyons," which closes the album, taking us on a journey to Africa, filled with countless evocative elements brought forth not only by the rhythmic structure but also by Emma D’Erasmo's voice.
The more I listen to this album, the more it intrigues me, as I discover new and fascinating nuances with each listen.
