Venanzio Venditti Quintet – Inside (Alfa Music, 2024)
In questi giorni di caldo intenso cosa c’è di meglio che farsi rinfrescare da un buon disco jazz che sa di classico ma anche di moderno?
Ebbene, io lo sto facendo ascoltando “Inside”, nuovo lavoro del sassofonista Venanzio Venditti ed il suo quintetto.
L’album è uscito a Maggio per la sempre attenta e propositiva etichetta Alfa Music che cala sul piatto l’ennesima ottima proposta che farà la felicità di tutti gli appassionati del genere.
Gli ottimi musicisti che affiancano Venditti (sax tenore) in questo lavoro rispondono ai nomi di Francesco Lento alla tromba, Roberto Tarenzi al pianoforte e la sezione ritmica formata da Francesco Puglisi al contrabbasso e Marco Valeri alla batteria.
Le dieci tracce che compongono la scaletta del disco (sette a firma del sassofonista e tre classici riletti) sono varie e spaziano tra i vari stili del genere dimostrando la profonda conoscenza e la qualità compositiva ed esecutiva di Venditti e di tutti i musicisti coinvolti.
Cinquantadue minuti di grande jazz che ha il DNA negli anni ’50 e ’60 ma che è proposto con piglio moderno a dimostrazione della sensibilità dei musicisti e della loro voglia di mettersi in gioco con arrangiamenti freschi ed attuali.
Si parte subito con brio con la rilettura di “Ojos De Rojo” scritta da Cedar Walton dove il sax di Venditti è subito protagonista ben supportato dalla dinamica sezione ritmica.
Segue il classico “A Night In Tunisia” di Gillespie / Paparelli eseguita in modo notevole dove trova il giusto spazio anche l’ottima tromba di Francesco Lento che dialoga con il pianoforte di Roberto Tarenzi ed il sax di Venditti.
La terza traccia “Risonanza (MRI Magnetic Resonance Imaging)” vede l’introduzione del pianoforte di Roberto Tarenzi subito raggiunto dal sax e dalla tromba per una ballad dal forte impatto emotivo.
Il viaggio prosegue con “Bardo Thodol” con il gran lavoro del contrabbasso e batteria che danno il via ai soli di sax, tromba e pianoforte … Ottimo l’arrangiamento a testimoniare la levatura di tutti i musicisti coinvolti.
“Chic” è un omaggio a Chic Corea caratterizzato dai cambi di tempo e dagli assoli di gran pregio di sax, tromba e pianoforte.
Un’altra ballad degna di segnalazione è “The Last Coffee” dal retrogusto malinconico mentre “Bum” riaccende i motori della ritmica per un brano complesso e di grande impatto con i fiati sempre incisivi e presenti … ma non si può non sottolineare il gran lavoro del pianoforte.
Con “Something Else” si vira verso il bebop degli anni che furono … un tuffo nel passato che evidenzia la solida conoscenza della materia di Venanzio Venditti e della qualità a livello di compositore.
Siamo quasi al termine di questo ottimo disco giusto per citare le ultime due tracce che partono con la fresca rilettura della Davisiana “Seven Steps to Heaven” e, per concludere, la bonus track “The Last Coffee (Bonus Track)” eseguita in modo alternativo rispetto alla precedente.
In conclusione un ottimo disco dove si percepisce la maturità artistica raggiunta da Venanzio Venditti e l’eccellenza dei musicisti che suonano con lui.
Chi desidera viaggiare attraverso i vari umori del jazz ma, in generale, chi ama la musica di qualità troverà in “Inside” pane per i suoi denti.

During these days of intense heat, what could be better than cooling off with a great jazz album that blends the classic with the modern?
Well, that's exactly what I'm doing by listening to "Inside," the new work from saxophonist Venanzio Venditti and his quintet.
The album was released in May by the ever-attentive and proactive label Alfa Music, which once again delivers an excellent offering that will delight all jazz enthusiasts.
The talented musicians accompanying Venditti (tenor sax) on this project are Francesco Lento on trumpet, Roberto Tarenzi on piano, and the rhythm section formed by Francesco Puglisi on double bass and Marco Valeri on drums.
The ten tracks on the album (seven originals by Venditti and three reimagined classics) are diverse, spanning various styles of the genre, showcasing the deep knowledge, compositional skill, and performance quality of Venditti and all the musicians involved.
Fifty-two minutes of great jazz that has its roots in the '50s and '60s but is presented with a modern approach, demonstrating the musicians' sensitivity and their desire to innovate with fresh and contemporary arrangements.
The album kicks off with energy, featuring a reinterpretation of Cedar Walton's "Ojos De Rojo," where Venditti's sax takes center stage, well supported by the dynamic rhythm section.
Next is the classic "A Night in Tunisia" by Gillespie/Paparelli, performed exceptionally, with Francesco Lento's brilliant trumpet engaging in a lively dialogue with Roberto Tarenzi's piano and Venditti's sax.
The third track, "Risonanza (MRI Magnetic Resonance Imaging)," begins with an introduction by Tarenzi on piano, soon joined by sax and trumpet, creating an emotionally powerful ballad.
The journey continues with "Bardo Thodol," where the excellent work of the double bass and drums sets the stage for sax, trumpet, and piano solos... The outstanding arrangement highlights the caliber of all the musicians involved.
"Chic" is a tribute to Chick Corea, characterized by tempo changes and impressive solos by sax, trumpet, and piano.
Another ballad worth noting is "The Last Coffee," with its melancholic undertone, while "Bum" reignites the rhythmic engine for a complex and impactful piece, with the horns always sharp and present... Not to mention the excellent piano work.
With "Something Else," the album takes a turn towards the bebop of the past... A dive into history that highlights Venanzio Venditti's deep understanding of the genre and his quality as a composer.
As we near the end of this excellent album, the last two tracks start with a fresh reinterpretation of the Davis classic "Seven Steps to Heaven" and conclude with the bonus track "The Last Coffee (Bonus Track)," performed in an alternative version compared to the previous one.
In conclusion, this is an outstanding album where the artistic maturity of Venanzio Venditti and the excellence of the musicians who play with him are clearly evident.
Anyone looking to journey through the various moods of jazz, and generally anyone who loves quality music, will find "Inside" to be a perfect choice.
