Dino Massa – Altri Tempi / Homage To Bill Evans (Encore Music, 2023)
Non è da tutti affrontare l’opera del genio Bill Evans e riuscire a farlo in modo credibile, anzi, riuscendo a donarle freschezza e attualità. Eppure, il pianista Dino Massa con l’album “Altri Tempi / Homage To Bill Evans”, uscito lo scorso anno per l’etichetta Encore Music, ha colpito nel segno, centrando tutti gli obiettivi descritti.
In questo disco, Massa, pianista e compositore napoletano, è stato affiancato da Dario Spinelli al basso elettrico e dall’eccellente batteria di Marco Castaldo. Il lavoro si compone di nove tracce, tra cui l’inedito “In My Home”, scritto dallo stesso Massa, che si distingue per la sua qualità e sensibilità compositiva, mantenendo il confronto con brani che possono essere considerati dei classici.
L’uso del basso elettrico conferisce energia e modernità al progetto, mentre la batteria aggiunge dinamiche equilibrate e mai invadenti, che accompagnano melodie sempre ben definite.
Da segnalare è l’ottima versione di “Blue In Green”, caratterizzata da un notevole dialogo tra pianoforte e basso elettrico. Inoltre, “Nardis” di Miles Davis viene reinterpretata con dinamismo e freschezza, mettendo in luce il valore esecutivo dei tre musicisti.
Degni di nota anche il ritmo contagioso di “Funkallero” e “Very Early”, che chiudono un disco di grande spessore artistico e strumentale.
Ci tengo a sottolineare che ogni traccia del disco è di altissima qualità, senza alcun calo di tono. L'intero album scorre con una fluidità tale da risultare piacevole anche per chi, come me, non è un grande conoscitore di jazz. Ad ogni nuovo ascolto emergono nuove sfumature e dettagli, che si insinuano nella mente e restano impressi per molto tempo.
Questo lavoro evidenzia la sensibilità interpretativa di Dino Massa, oltre al pregevole lavoro di arrangiamento, valorizzato dal suono pulito della registrazione, offrendo quasi cinquanta minuti di grande musica che saprà conquistare gli appassionati di jazz e non solo.

It's not easy to take on the work of the genius Bill Evans and do so in a credible way, let alone manage to bring freshness and relevance to it. Yet, pianist Dino Massa hits the mark with his album “Altri Tempi / Homage To Bill Evans,” released last year by Encore Music, achieving all of the above.
In this album, Massa, a Neapolitan pianist and composer, is joined by Dario Spinelli on electric bass and the excellent drumming of Marco Castaldo. The work consists of nine tracks, including the previously unreleased "In My Home," written by Massa himself, which stands out for its quality and compositional sensitivity, holding its own alongside pieces that can be considered classics.
The use of the electric bass brings energy and modernity to the project, while the drums add balanced, never intrusive dynamics that support the well-defined melodies.
Noteworthy is the excellent version of "Blue In Green," characterized by a remarkable dialogue between piano and electric bass. Additionally, "Nardis" by Miles Davis is reinterpreted with dynamism and freshness, showcasing the performance skills of the three musicians.
Also deserving mention is the contagious rhythm of "Funkallero" and "Very Early," which close out an album of great artistic and instrumental depth.
I want to emphasize that every track on the album is of exceptional quality, with no dips in tone. The entire record flows so smoothly that it's enjoyable even for someone like me, who isn't a jazz expert. With each listen, new nuances and details come to light, sticking with you and lingering in your mind for a long time.
This work highlights Dino Massa’s interpretive sensitivity, as well as the excellent arrangement work, enhanced by the clean sound of the recording, offering nearly fifty minutes of great music that will captivate jazz enthusiasts and beyond.
