Katarina Kochetova – Beyond Motion (A.MA Records, 2024)
Sempre belle sorprese da casa A.MA Records di Antonio Martino che, questa volta, ci propone l’ottimo esordio della giovane pianista e compositrice ucraina Katarina Kochetova “Beyond Motion”.
Ad accompagnala in questo lavoro troviamo Hugo Lof al contrabbasso e Matheus Jardim alla batteria che vengono raggiunti, in alcuni brani da Joander Cruz al sax alto e Jure Pukl al sax tenore.
Ma vediamo di conoscere meglio la pianista di Kiev.
Figlia d’arte perchè suo padre Max Kochetov è un rinomato sassofonista e compositore jazz (da ascoltare “Altered Feelings” uscito sempre per A.Ma Records nel 2022), si fa le ossa tra Kiev e Belgrado dove affina le sue competenze in pianoforte classico … Nel 2018 si trasferisce in Austria dove ottiene ottima visibilità nella scena locale per le sue doti di fondere elementi classici col jazz, reinventando standard e proponendo una sua personale visione sonora sul lavoro di Thelonius Monk.
Questo gruppo di musicisti affascinanti ed innovativi crea una sinergia dinamica che coinvolgerà l'ascoltatore proprio come il loro pubblico dal vivo. La splendida copertina di "Beyond Motion" è tratta da un dipinto originale di Katerina Kochetova, che dimostra il suo talento non solo come artista visiva, ma anche come compositrice, musicista e bandleader.
Beyond Motion si ispira all'energia vibrante della scena jazz di New York ed ogni traccia intreccia melodie e ritmi complessi, per un contemporary jazz che assorbe molte influenze grazie alla grande visione musicale della Kochetova ed invita così gli ascoltatori ad immergersi in un mondo di esplorazione musicale.
Le dieci tracce che compongono la scaletta del disco conducono l’ascoltatore in un viaggio emozionale e tengono alta l’asticella dell’attenzione per tutta la durata del lavoro, questo per la grande creatività della leader e del gran lavoro svolto dai suoi musicisti.
I brani che mi sento di sottolineare sono sicuramente l’opener “Self Portrait” dove è già da subito possibile apprezzare il pianismo della Kochetova dove la classica incrocia il jazz.
“UnitEled#4” vede aggiungersi al trio il sax alto di Joander Cruz per un brano molto coinvolgente e dalla struttura ritmica abile nel variare tempi ed umori … Sax e pianoforte si rincorrono e si incontrano in un delizioso viaggio sonoro.
Stupenda per melodia ed atmosfera “Ballad For Natasha” che cattura l’anima con la sua melodia così come la splendida “Beyond Motion” introdotta dal contrabbasso di Hugo Lof già dalla traccia precedente “Bass Intro” e che vede sempre l’ottimo contributo di Joander Cruz al sax alto.
La seguente “Eternal Goodbye” vede la partecipazione del sax tenore di Jure Pukl e dimostra, ancora una volta, la versatilità compositiva della pianista ucraina nel saper destreggiarsi nei vari umori del brano e, lo voglio sottolineare ancora, la qualità esecutiva di tutti i musicisti coinvolti.
Ripeto che tutte le tracce sono assolutamente di livello superiore e che non c’è nessuna caduta di tono in tutta la durata del disco che riesce sempre a mantenere alta la tensione e la concentrazione dell’ascoltatore cosa non così scontata al giorno d’oggi.
Se amate il jazz contemporaneo segnatevi il nome di Katarina Kochetova ed ascoltate la sua musica, sono sicuro che ne rimarrete affascinati.

Always beautiful surprises from Antonio Martino's A.MA Records, which this time brings us the excellent debut of the young Ukrainian pianist and composer Katarina Kochetova with "Beyond Motion."
Accompanying her on this work are Hugo Lof on double bass and Matheus Jardim on drums, who are joined on some tracks by Joander Cruz on alto saxophone and Jure Pukl on tenor saxophone.
But let's get to know the pianist from Kiev better.
A daughter of the arts, her father Max Kochetov is a renowned jazz saxophonist and composer (listen to "Altered Feelings," also released by A.MA Records in 2022). Katarina honed her skills between Kiev and Belgrade, where she refined her classical piano training. In 2018, she moved to Austria, gaining excellent visibility in the local scene for her ability to blend classical elements with jazz, reinventing standards and offering her personal sonic vision on the work of Thelonious Monk.
This group of fascinating and innovative musicians creates a dynamic synergy that will captivate listeners just as it does their live audience. The stunning cover of "Beyond Motion" is taken from an original painting by Katerina Kochetova, showcasing her talent not only as a visual artist but also as a composer, musician, and bandleader.
"Beyond Motion" draws inspiration from the vibrant energy of the New York jazz scene, with each track intertwining complex melodies and rhythms. This contemporary jazz album absorbs many influences thanks to Kochetova's great musical vision, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in a world of musical exploration.
The ten tracks that make up the album take the listener on an emotional journey, maintaining high levels of attention throughout, thanks to the leader's great creativity and the excellent work of her musicians.
The tracks I would highlight are definitely the opener "Self Portrait," where Kochetova's piano, blending classical and jazz elements, can be appreciated right away.
"UnitEled#4" sees the addition of Joander Cruz's alto sax to the trio for a highly engaging track with a rhythmic structure that skillfully varies in tempo and mood. Saxophone and piano chase and meet in a delightful sonic journey.
"Ballad For Natasha" is stunning for its melody and atmosphere, capturing the soul with its tune, just as the splendid "Beyond Motion," introduced by Hugo Lof's double bass from the previous track "Bass Intro," which also features Joander Cruz on alto saxophone.
The following track, "Eternal Goodbye," features Jure Pukl's tenor saxophone and once again demonstrates the Ukrainian pianist's compositional versatility in navigating the various moods of the piece, and, I must emphasize again, the high quality of execution by all the musicians involved.
I repeat, all the tracks are of superior quality, with no dips in tone throughout the album, which consistently keeps the listener's attention and concentration high—something not so common nowadays.
