Shljuka Quintet – Octave Up (A.MA Records, 2024)

Nuova produzione per Antonio Martino e la sua A.MA Records che, anche questa volta, accontenta il popolo del jazz con un altro gran bel disco “Octave Up”, firmato dal pianista, compositore ed arrangiatore serbo Aleksandar Jovanović, accompagnato da ottimi musicisti che rispondono ai nomi di: Ivan Radivojevic alla tromba, Rastko Obradovic al sassofono contralto e soprano, Milan Pavkovic al contrabbasso ed Aleksandar Cvetkovic alla batteria.

“Octave Up” è un album di jazz contemporaneo dove le tradizioni dei Balcani incontrano e sposano quelle americane; il risultato è estremamente piacevole oltre che vario e pieno di idee perché la loro visione di jazz è molto attuale e porta freschezza ai brani presenti nel disco.

Le otto composizioni che compongono la scaletta, tutte firmate da Shljuka, sono aperte, ariose, e spesso sfociano in una fusion acustica dove la qualità esecutiva dei musicisti marchia con personalità l’opera.

Ogni brano è come un viaggio affascinante che attende d’essere esplorato dall'ascoltatore. 

Sono rimasto profondamente colpito da questo gruppo; apprezzo sia l'abilità del pianista, del trombettista e del sassofonista nell'interpretare le melodie con maestria, sia il formidabile lavoro di basso e batteria che fornisce un'energia travolgente, permettendo agli altri musicisti di brillare al massimo delle loro potenzialità.

Ciò che rende davvero magico questo lavoro è l'individualità e la libertà di espressione di ogni musicista coinvolto. Ognuno porta con sé la propria storia, la propria esperienza e la propria visione, contribuendo a creare un'opera unica ed inimitabile nel suo genere. In questo album, la musica diventa un linguaggio universale che parla direttamente al cuore di chi ascolta, trasportandolo in un viaggio senza tempo attraverso le profondità dell'arte e dell'emozione.

Tra le tracce vorrei portare alla vostra attenzione “What If…” , brano dalla struttura ritmica decisa che porta i Balcani in America e che vede tromba, pianoforte e sax esprimersi con assoli veramente affascinanti.

Se amate il jazz, la world music e la fusion questo disco è per voi; a tutti gli altri il consiglio è di ascoltarlo perché qui limiti di genere non ce ne sono e la musica che esce dalle casse è libera e piena di espressività.

New production for Antonio Martino and his A.MA Records, which, once again, pleases jazz enthusiasts with another great album, "Octave Up," signed by Serbian pianist, composer, and arranger Aleksandar Jovanović. He is accompanied by excellent musicians: Ivan Radivojevic on trumpet, Rastko Obradovic on alto and soprano saxophone, Milan Pavkovic on double bass, and Aleksandar Cvetkovic on drums.

"Octave Up" is a contemporary jazz album where Balkan traditions meet and marry American ones; the result is extremely pleasing, as well as diverse and full of ideas, because their vision of jazz is very current and brings freshness to the tracks on the album. The eight compositions that make up the lineup, all signed by Shljuka, are open, airy, and often merge into an acoustic fusion where the executive quality of the musicians leaves its mark with personality.

Each track is like a fascinating journey waiting to be explored by the listener. I was deeply impressed by this group; I appreciate both the skill of the pianist, trumpeter, and saxophonist in interpreting the melodies masterfully, and the formidable work of bass and drums that provides overwhelming energy, allowing the other musicians to shine to the fullest of their potential.

What truly makes this work magical is the individuality and freedom of expression of each musician involved. Each brings their own story, experience, and vision, contributing to creating a unique and incomparable work in its genre. In this album, music becomes a universal language that speaks directly to the heart of the listener, transporting them on a timeless journey through the depths of art and emotion.
