 Southlands - Still Play'n (Appaloosa Records, 2024)

Dopo l'anticipazione col singolo "You Are The Sun", esce oggi, per l'etichetta Appaloosa Records "Still Play'n", il nuovo album dei Southlands, band dell'Oltrepo pavese nata nel 2001 e dedita ad un rock americano, quello con i giusti riferimenti fissati su artisti come Bruce Springsteen, J.C. Mellencamp, Steve Earle, John Hiatt per citarne solo alcuni.

Quindi un menù autografo tutto da gustare e scoprire. Ottimi gli arrangiamenti, le voci e gli intrecci strumentali che fanno pensare che non si tratti di una band italiana ma americana.

Nel loro sound troverete contaminazioni del territorio che si fondono alla perfezione con i paesaggi statunitensi al confine con il Messico, quel rock stradaiolo che tanto abbiamo amato ma anche da ballad intense e profonde.

La band è oggi formata da  Roberto Semini (chitarra e compositore), Dario Savini (voce), Michele Romani (batteria), Riccardo Caldin (basso) e Fabrizio Sgorbini (chitarre e cori) ma a contribuire alla festa troviamo anche vecchi amici e conoscenze note nell'ambiente musicale italiano di qualità quali Jimmy Ragazzon, Paolo Canevari, Riccardo Maccabruni e Marco Rovino, alcuni componenti dei Mandolin’ Brothers, e poi Mario Zara e Maurizio “Micio” Fassino.
Una menzione speciale per la vocalist Sara Cantatore, cantante principale o ai cori in molte tracce dell’album.

Si legge dal comunicato stampa che ‘Still Play’n’ racconta storie di vita vissuta, di esperienze, amori e delusioni e di viaggi verso l’ignoto. Di una vita trascorsa nella maturazione, dove i sogni giovanili si confrontano con una realtà a volte burrascosa, ma quello che resta è la voglia di continuare a fare musica, a regalare e regalarsi emozioni.
‘Still Play’n’ è disco ricco di ballate d’amore, mai banali, spesso tormentate e molto introspettive, dove le chitarre sono tanto presenti, con pochi effetti ma svariati arrangiamenti melodici che danno risalto a questa bella carrellata di canzoni, reale carta d’identità della band.

Inoltre la band tende a precisare che nel loro stile musicale, le influenze del luogo si mescolano armoniosamente con le atmosfere degli Stati Uniti al confine con il Messico. Qui, le melodie di Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, Los Lobos e dei Creedence Clearwater Revival si mescolano con i sapori della Bonarda e le prelibatezze della cucina locale. Tra strade secondarie percorse da trattori, bar isolati e lunghe traversate in auto, si dipana un intreccio di storie d'amore, di amicizia e di vita rurale.

Quindi che aspettate ? Se amate l'american music, quella più autentica e legata alle tradizioni roots, non potete farvi sfuggire questo gran bel disco ... parola di Redapolis.

Ottima, inoltre la veste grafica del prodotto, curato nei minimi particolari e, altresì di gran qualità la registrazione curata da Giacomo Lampugnani e mixata da Marco Alberto Matti di Casemate Studio a cui è seguito il master eseguito da Carl Saff a Chicago, Illinois.

After the anticipation with the single "You Are The Sun," today marks the release of "Still Play'n," the new album by Southlands, a band from Oltrepò Pavese established in 2001 and dedicated to American rock, drawing inspiration from artists like Bruce Springsteen, J.C. Mellencamp, Steve Earle, and John Hiatt, to name a few.

It's like an autographed menu waiting to be savored and discovered. The arrangements are excellent, as are the vocals and instrumental interweaving, making it easy to forget they're an Italian band and not American.
