Blues Joke – Better Old Than Dead (2024)
I Blues Joke sono una nuova formazione della zona veronese che si muove in area hard rock blues e southern rock con riferimenti nelle storiche band americane come i Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot, Point Blank e Doc Holiday, Allman Brothers band e Lynyrd Skynyrd (solo per citarne alcune) che, dalla seconda metà dei ’70 rinvigorirono la musica del sud degli States con dosi massicce di chiatte marchiate a fuoco dal hard rock.
Il gruppo è composto da tre artisti dalle esperienze assai diversificate, ciascuno con un percorso che riflette il proprio universo musicale unico. Francesco Caldarola, con la sua voce e basso, porta con sé un bagaglio di influenze alternative rock, mentre Marco Marini, con la sua chitarra, ha esplorato il mondo del rock blues. Completano la formazione Marco Piran, batterista dalla grande esperienza, noto per la sua militanza in band di metal estremo come Mothercare e Aneurysm. Questi elementi si fondono in un suono fresco e contemporaneo, che arricchisce il progetto con una spiccata personalità.
Il sound che emerge è deciso e incisivo, con una potenza ben dosata che riesce a catturare l'attenzione senza risultare sovrabbondante. La voce di Francesco Caldarola si distingue subito per la sua tonalità affilata e incisiva, mentre i riff infuocati di Marco Marini, sempre precisi e mai sopra le righe, aggiungono una carica esplosiva. La sezione ritmica, solida e compatta grazie al lavoro congiunto di Caldarola e Marco Piran, conferisce al tutto una base granitica che sorregge perfettamente l’intera proposta musicale.
Insomma in “Better Old Than Dead”, uscito per Andromeda Relix, c’è di che divertirsi … un sound che non da tregua al “tiro” di una miccia sempre accesa pronta ad esplodere.
Tutte le 11 tracce mantengono una carica costante, senza mai perdere intensità, e la tensione non cala mai, accompagnando l’ascoltatore fino all’ultimo minuto.
Un inizio di grande impatto è quello di "At The End", dove il riff dal sapore southern chiarisce immediatamente l’approccio energico e deciso del gruppo.
Un altro momento clou arriva con "Free Nine", che riecheggia il sound iconico dei Led Zeppelin, regalando un piacere puro a chi ama l’hard rock; impossibile non menzionare anche "Let’s Rock You All", un frenetico rock’n’roll che sembra non voler mai rallentare, travolgente nella sua corsa. Infine, "Wasting Time", in chiusura dell'album, si presenta come una ballad hard rock dal forte impatto emotivo, un vero e proprio esempio della maturità compositiva della band.
Un album di grande valore, in cui la potenza del suono si fonde con una maestria tecnica notevole. Pur mantenendo forti legami con le sonorità dei ’70, la band riesce a darne una lettura moderna, conferendo freschezza e attualità a un patrimonio musicale classico.
Se amate il rock potente intriso di blues che viaggia tra l’America e l’Inghilterra questo disco non potete proprio farvelo scappare.

Blues Joke is a new band from the Verona area, blending hard rock blues and southern rock with influences from iconic American bands such as Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot, Point Blank, Doc Holiday, Allman Brothers Band, and Lynyrd Skynyrd (just to name a few). From the late '70s onward, these bands reinvigorated Southern American music with heavy doses of hard rock, leaving their mark on the genre.
The group consists of three musicians with highly diverse backgrounds, each bringing their unique musical universe to the table. Francesco Caldarola, with his voice and bass, carries influences from alternative rock, while Marco Marini, on guitar, has explored the world of rock blues. Completing the lineup is Marco Piran, a highly experienced drummer known for his work with extreme metal bands such as Mothercare and Aneurysm. These elements come together in a fresh and contemporary sound, giving the project a distinctive personality.
The resulting sound is bold and punchy, with a well-balanced power that grabs attention without overwhelming the listener. Francesco Caldarola’s voice immediately stands out for its sharp, cutting tone, while Marco Marini’s fiery riffs are always precise and never over the top, adding an explosive charge to the music. The rhythm section, solid and tight thanks to the combined work of Caldarola and Marco Piran, provides a rock-solid foundation that perfectly supports the entire musical offering.
In "Better Old Than Dead," released by Andromeda Relix, there’s plenty of fun to be had… a sound that never gives in to the “spark” of a constantly burning fuse, ready to explode.
All 11 tracks maintain a steady intensity, never losing momentum, and the tension stays high, guiding the listener right through to the final note.
The album kicks off with the impactful "At The End," where the southern-flavored riff immediately makes the band’s energetic, determined approach clear.
Another standout moment comes with "Free Nine," which echoes the iconic sound of Led Zeppelin, providing pure enjoyment for hard rock lovers; and we can’t forget "Let’s Rock You All," a frantic rock’n’roll track that seems to have no intention of slowing down, relentless in its drive. Finally, "Wasting Time," closing the album, stands out as a hard rock ballad with great emotional depth, a true showcase of the band’s compositional maturity.
This is an album of great value, where the power of the sound blends with remarkable technical skill. While maintaining strong ties to the '70s sound, the band manages to give it a modern twist, infusing freshness and relevance into a classic musical heritage.
